A newspaper entitled 'The Edinburgh Gazette' has existed under various guises since 1680. The first known run is No.1, 7 Dec 1680; No.2, 14 Dec - No. 4, 28 Dec 1680. Our journals come from the second and third sequences which are: twice a week - No. 1, 2 Mar 1699 - No. 336, 8 Jun 1702 - [1705] - [c. 1706]; No.1, 25 Apr 1706 - No.46, 7 Oct 1706 (ed. At the same time another newspaper appeared as 'The Edinburgh Gazette', No. 144 (first number), 18 Aug 1709 - No. 157, [n.d.] - [c. Dec 1709] (ed. James Donaldson)]. The newspaper then continued twice a week as The Edinburgh Gazette, Or Scots Postman, with the Freshest Occurences, Foreign and Domestic, No. 1, 11 Mar - No. 67, 9 Nov 1714 - [No. 73]; No. 74, 3 Mar 1715 - No. 76 (for 77), 15 Mar 1715 [-?]. The title reappears as The Edinburgh Gazette, No. 1, 1 Feb - No. 26, 28 Apr - [Jul 1780] (twice a week) (ed. Thomas Robertson), and again as The Edinburgh Gazette, No. 1, 2 Jul 1793 - onwards (twice a week) (an official paper analogous to The London Gazette).
